    Fred May Band
The Fred May Band first formed in 2001 as an Americana band and was named the "Franklin Ladies Aid
Society". I started out playing washboard, melodica and later the accordion. We performed for outdoor
parties & weddings and eventually started gigging in local music venues. In 1998, I went to an open mic
at Charlie Macs in Veneta, Oregon (now closed) where I heard a blues singer that caught my attention.
It wasn't long before I invited Merlin Standeford to join my band. We stayed with our Americana for
several more years, then in 2016, I decided to let Merlin take the band in a new direction...it was time
for him to get back to the BLUES and time for me to get back to playing my keyboards.
We spent a year in a garage learning a completely new repertoire and came out the other end a Blues
Band. The Blues was always Merlin's favorite genre. With the band's new direction, Merlin could do
what he loves most--singing the Blues!
In additionm to myself, the band also features Dave Roberts on drums. Dave manages Jimmy Macs
Thursday night Blues Jam at the Overtime Tavern in Eugene and also plays with two other bands, "Guilty
Pleasures" and "Twenty Feet Away". Our guitar man is Paul Van Steenberg. Paul has played guitar all

over town with various bands. The band is rounded out with Dave Cooper on Bass Guitar. Dave is well-
known around town and plays bass guitar with Dave Roberts and Tim Leopp in Twenty Feet Away.

We also toss in a bit of rock and funk with our Blues. We play music you'll want to dance to. -Fred May
