Music Education & Performing Artists Association and GRRRLZ ROCK work to support and celebrate the contribution women make to music and the arts. We will be raising funds for our upcoming festival and highlighting our all grrrl youth band, S.O.N.G. (Sirens Of the Next Generation) that was created at Ophelia’s Place as part of our weekly programs.

Roni Lee joined our advisory board in 2016 after visiting our jam space and performing with our festival. She has had an amazing impact on our youth participants and we are excited to have her back in town with an all girl band!

Roni Lee was the original guitarist for Venus and The Razorblades and founder of Play Like A Girl Records. The hit song she co-wrote with Kim Fowley, “I Wanna Be Where The Boys Are” was a regularly performed by The Runaways and went GOLD. She has toured internationally and spends her spare time supporting young women in their music careers and goals.

Her all girl band includes powerhouse musician Debbie Flood who has been playing drums since she was 13 and included on event lineups with names like Indigo Girls, Melissa Etheridge, Leanne Rimes and the Dixie Chicks. She proudly supports Richmond’s Girls Rock programming.

On bass, Julia Whelpton (Jules), also started playing at age 13 in San Diego and now teaches lessons at the Youth Arts Academy with a Music degree from Humboldt University. A big sound in a small, portable package!

Other participants, Blood On The Banjo, the family trio Engelmann, multi-media indie music artist, Amanda Langley, and the rocking duo, Bajuana Tea, with heavy hitting drummer and vocalist, our very own Executive Director of MEPAA, aka Fairy Rock Mother, Matrisha Armitage will be representing.
